Sounds Like Morbius Could Be The Next Spiderverse Movie Made After Venom
In less than a week from now, Venom will be arriving in theaters-- with Sony banking on this being the beginning of its shared universe of Spider-Man movies. The studio has already announced a few different projects in the works, like Silver and Black, Silk, and Morbius the Living Vampire. The former was assumed to be the next film following Venom, but the project faced some setbacks and is getting retooled. So, what's going to follow Venom? It sounds like it will be Morbius, which CinemaBlend learned is the project most far along in development.
Well, Morbius is very, very far along. So that's something that we're planning to go make in the very near future.
CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell asked producer Matt Tolmach what movie Sony was planning to have follow Venom at the film's press junket. Tolmach couldn't give a 100% confirmation, but he singled out Morbius as being the closest to production. The movie already has a star attached to it in the form of Jared Leto, who has been tasked to play the lead role of Morbius. The film has a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and Daniel Espinosa is set to direct. The project was first announced back in 2017, and it sounds like things have gone smooth enough that it'll be next in line after Venom arrives in October.
Morbius the Living Vampire is formerly a supernatural Spider-Man villain, who became a brooding and gritty anti-hero. Michael Morbius was a biochemist trying to cure his rare blood disorder, but one of his experiments went terrible-- and he transformed himself into a grotesque vampire-like creature who hungers for human blood. Though disgusted with himself and desperate for a cure, Morbius decides to feast on criminals who aren't "worthy" of life.
Not much is known about the plot of Morbius, but rumors indicate that it will be reasonably loyal to the origin of the character. No other actors are currently attached to the project, but if this thing is supposed to come out after Venom, I will wager that we will start to hear some casting announcements relatively soon.
As to whether this is the best pick to follow Venom, Mornius might be Sony's best bet if it's already far into development. Venom is the most mainstream Spider-Man character they own the rights to, and the others aren't exactly recognizable. In that case, it probably doesn't matter much what follows Venom, as long as it's an exciting concept.
