Ethan Hunt's Luckiest Moments In The Mission: Impossible Franchise

In Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation, the villainous Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) makes a bold statement about the franchise's great hero, Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt. Discussing the IMF agent with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), Lane argues, "Ethan Hunt is a gambler -- and one day his luck will run out, and thousands of innocent people will pay the price." Taken at face value, this may sound like simple antagonist talk, making the argument that the world's great champion is no better than he is... but that changes when you really start to think about the statement.

While there is no denying that Ethan Hunt possesses some incredible skills (and is ridiculously brave), it's legitimately surprising how often his work comes down to simple luck. Looking back at the many titles in the Mission: Impossible franchise, there are many moments where Hunt puts lives in the hands of destiny, and it just so happens that most of the time things work out well for him. Now, with Mission: Impossible -- Fallout ready to hit theaters soon, we thought it would be an appropriate time to look back at some of those outrageously fatalistic sequences, starting with one of the best ever:

A Knife Falls At The Most Perfect Possible Speed (Mission: Impossible)Everybody remembers the sight of Ethan Hunt dangling from the ceiling of a secure vault in the CIA's Langley Headquarters in the first Mission: Impossible, but what most probably don't remember is how the whole thing almost completely falls apart at the very end. As Hunt is struggling to get back to the ceiling after stealing the famous NOC List, Franz Krieger (Jean Reno) accidentally drops his knife... and for a split second it looks like the heroes are totally screwed. As soon as the blade drops, it will activate both the sound and motion censors, leading to inevitable capture. That's not the way it goes down, however. Instead, the knife pierces the room's computer desk just as William Donloe (Rolf Saxon) is entering the room, stopping the alarms from sounding.

It should be pointed out that the knife drop does wind up being a bad thing, as it alerts Donloe to the fact that somebody had been messing around with the computer. That being said, Hunt and his crew are super fortunate that the CIA agent entered the room when he did, because things could have been much, much worse. The bespectacled suit is very slow to piece together exactly what happened while he was puking in the bathroom, and the response to the room's alarm system would have been immediate and severe in contrast. There's no way they would have been able to make it out of the building if Donloe had finished the security protocols a moment before or after he did, and that timing can only be described as lucky.

He Blows Up A Helicopter In A Train Tunnel And Survives (Mission: Impossible)The modern era of the Mission: Impossible franchise has been defined by the real, practical stunts performed by Tom Cruise... and it's with that in mind that we look back on the bonkers finale of the first Mission: Impossible. Fans will remember that the climax finds a helicopter trailing behind a train as it goes through a tunnel, with Ethan Hunt on top of the latter vehicle trying to stop a double agent and his associate from escaping. It ends when Hunt uses his specially designed explosive chewing gum to blow up the chopper... and the mere fact that he basically walks away from the whole encounter unscathed is basically a miracle.

This is surely an example of base movie hero luck, as the whole thing is totally unreal and any actual person would have definitely died doing what Ethan Hunt does - but it's still worth talking about for the details. Not only should Hunt count his blessings that he actually manages to land on the train after leaping away from the exploding helicopter, but you may recall that the whole sequence ends with a razor-sharp helicopter blade coming within an inch of slicing his throat open. There was very little actual skill involved here; it's basically Hunt making what would otherwise be a sacrifice move and just happening to survive.

Julia Brings Him Back From The Dead Because Of Her Awesome Nurse Skills (Mission: Impossible III)Reflecting on the finale of Mission: Impossible III, Ethan Hunt is ridiculously lucky that the woman he loves happens to be trained health professional. If she were a successful executive, or a middle school teacher, she probably couldn't have done what she did - which is to say both kill her husband and then revive him. The process is necessary in order to short out an explosive implanted in his head, and if it weren't for Julia's experience as a nurse we wouldn't have gotten the most recent trilogy of Mission: Impossible movies.

Unlike all of the other entries on this list, in the moment there is only one life in the balance, as it's one of the few instances in the franchise where Ethan Hunt is trying desperately to save himself. But if you consider all of the people he winds up protecting in Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, and Fallout, then you realize the retroactive stakes. If the hero is all by himself in the finale of Mission: Impossible III, or doesn't have someone who can start his heart again after electrocution, his run with the Impossible Mission Force is done. I'm sure there are many reasons for him to be happy to have Julia in his life, but this one definitely has to top the list, an it kind of makes you wonder why he distanced himself from her after the incident.

He Totally Gambles That Sabine Moreau Doesn't Know Marius Wistrom and Leonid Lisenker (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol)One of the most iconic elements of the Mission: Impossible franchise is the utilization of specially designed masks. With their advanced technology, IMF agents can basically become anyone... but it requires the technology to be functioning. This is the issue that the heroes face in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and it leads to a pretty scary gamble. When interfering in a meeting between assassin Sabine Moreau (Lea Seydoux), international criminal Marius Wistrom (Samuli Edelmann), and physicist Leonid Lisenker (Ivan Shvedoff), they put all of their money on the idea that Moreau doesn't know the faces of the men she's dealing with, and it just happens to work out in their favor.

But what if Sabine Moreau did know what Marius Wistrom and Leonid Lisenker looked like? If that were the case, Brandt (Jeremy Renner) wouldn't have been able to scan the nuclear codes with his special contacts, and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) would have been left offering the real Wistrom and Lisenker an empty briefcase. Truly everything could have fallen apart for Ethan Hunt's plan if Moreau had done a simple Google search for Lisenker's name, but fortunately for him and his crew she did not.

He Hits The Cancel Button On The Launch-Control Device At The Exact Right Time (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol)By the end of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, the IMF team is not exactly in sync. While Ethan Hunt battles terrorist Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist) in a parking garage, Benji (Simon Pegg), Brandt and Jane struggle to activate the satellite signal that would allow the shut down of a launched nuclear warhead heading for San Francisco. I say that they're not in sync because when Ethan Hunt finally gets to the launch-control device and declares, "Mission accomplished," nothing actually happens. When it comes right down to it, the world is insanely blessed that Hunt kept trying to press the button, because if he didn't the west coast of America would have been turned to ash.

If Ethan Hunt had taken even the briefest moment to be despondent about the button not working, the world would have been forever changed. The missile in question literally clips a skyscraper just seconds after its actual deactivation, and in the moment Hunt has no idea if his teammates are still actively trying to set up the satellite or have been killed. This is one of the closest calls in the entire Mission: Impossible franchise, and it's definitely not a moment that is entirely dictated by character choices.

The Whole Boarding-A-Plane-Mid-Flight Thing Is Insane (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation)Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation opens with one of the most mind-blowing cinematic stunts of all time, with Ethan Hunt famously holding on to the side of an airplane as it is taking off. The aircraft is said to contain radioactive material making its way to Syria, courtesy of the evil Syndicate, and the IMF is dead-set on stopping that from happening. It all works out in the end, with Hunt using a parachute to take the weaponry off the plane, but when you really consider everything that happens, Hunt is crazy lucky things worked out as well as they did.

Even ignoring the whole idea of being sucked into a jet engine - which is an all-too-real possibility in the scenario - it is amazing that Ethan Hunt survives this particular mission. I say this mostly because of what happens after Hunt is able to board the plane. Benji surely deserves kudos for hacking the machine and getting his daredevil friend through the door, but he also fails to close the cargo hatch before doing so. As a result, Hunt almost flies out of the aircraft as quickly as he gets into it. Also factor in the break the hero gets when the Syndicate guard doesn't immediately shoot him upon discovery, and you have a case where a lot of important elements were just put into the hands of the universe.

He Picks The Correct Data Card While Underwater (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation)Finally we have what is perhaps the greatest example of pure, unadulterated luck in the Mission: Impossible franchise: the underwater sequence in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Part of a daring heist, Ethan Hunt must hold his breath for six minutes as he switches out a data card in a submerged server, allowing Benji to access a maximum security facility. Unfortunately, as he is making the change he gets slammed by a rotating arm, and is left holding two identical data cards with no idea which one he is meant to upload. He makes a call and it winds up being the right one - but it's pretty amazing to see such a literal 50-50 chance play out.

As smart and skilled as Ethan Hunt may be, this situation is entirely about fortune and fate, and a perfect example of the universe smiling down on him. If he puts in the wrong card, Benji is captured, the entire operation falls apart, Ilsa is killed, and the Syndicate continues to operate without the IMF in its way. Luckily, that's not the case. But it makes you wonder: is Solomon Lane right in saying that Hunt's luck will eventually run out? We'll just have to keep watching Mission: Impossible movies to find out.

DC's New Gods: 6 Important Facts To Know About The Characters

Looking at its lineup of upcoming films, DC Comics is interested in not just spotlighting the more recognizable characters and teams from its comic book universe, but some of the more obscure ones as well. We can now add the New Gods to the latter category, as last week, it was announced last week that A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay will helm a movie centered around the Fourth World mythology, with Chasing Mavericks' Kario Salem penning the script.

The New Gods have been important players in the DC universe for decades, but if you're not a comic book reader or don't remember these characters from their appearances in the DC animated universe, it's entirely possible that you weren't aware of their existence. That's where we come in. While it may be a while until the New Gods movie gets off the ground, here are the important facts you need to know about these characters in the meantime.

They Were Created By Jack KirbyJack Kirby is primarily known for his work over in the Marvel universe, which includes co-creating Captain America (at Marvel Comics' predecessor, Timely Comics), the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man and plenty more. He's just as responsible for Marvel becoming a successful franchise as Stan Lee, if not more so. But in 1970, following numerous creative conflicts with Lee and other higher-ups at Marvel, Kirby left the comic book company and signed a deal with DC Comics. Kirby would return to Marvel in the latter half of the '70s, but for several years, he poured all his creative juices into spicing up the DC universe, which led to the creation of characters like OMAC, Kamandi, Etrigan the Demon and Kobra. However, the New Gods remain his biggest contributions to this fantastical universe, and depending on who you ask, they also potentially rank as his craziest and most psychedelic creations ever.

It's also worth mentioning that Kirby originally envisioned the Fourth World saga (comprised of the New Gods, Mister Miracle and The Forever People books) to only be a limited run, but when the early issues sold well, closer ties were established between these characters and the wider DC universe. Decades later, the New Gods remain integral players in the DC Comics world, to the point that in the New 52 continuity, Darkseid and his minions where the threat that led to the formation of the Justice League.

They're The Inhabitants Of New Genesis And ApokolipsIn case the name wasn't enough of a giveaway, the New Gods are among the most powerful beings in the DC universe. They came into existence when Urgund, the world where the old gods lived, was destroyed during the Ragnarok event. The destruction of Urgund resulted in the creation of New Genesis and Apokolips, and all the New Gods characters hail from one of those planets. With a few notable exceptions (we'll talk more about that later), usually the good New Gods hail from New Genesis, while the bad ones are denizens of Apokolips. New Genesis is ruled by Highfather, who, in addition to boasting numerous special abilities, is also able to communicate with the Source, the "consciousness" that resides in the Source Wall at the edge the know universe and binds reality together. Other cool inhabitants who reside on New Genesis include Mister Miracle, the greatest escape artist in all of reality; Big Barda, a fierce warrior who originally fought for Apokolips and Miracle's wife; Orion, who can harness the Astro Force; and Lightray, who can travel at the speed of light.

Moving to Apokolips, that hellish world is ruled by Darkseid, who isn't just the lead antagonist in New Gods stories, but also one of the greatest threats in the entire DC universe. Like Highfather, he can many superpowers (including his deadly Omega beams), and for a long time, his ultimate goal was to solve the Anti-Life Equation, which would have allowed him to control all sentient life in the universe. Darkseid's minions on Apokolips include Kalibak, his brutish son; Steppenwolf, his uncle and top general; DeSaad, the best torturer on Apokolips; Granny Goodness, who trains Darkseid's elite soldiers from a young age; and Glorious Godfrey, who is such a talented speaker that he can manipulate others to do his bidding. There are also a few New Gods characters who aren't full allied with either New Genesis or Apokolips, like Metron, a super genius who can travel through time and space when sitting in the Mobius Chair, and the Black Racer, the avatar of death who usually targets speedsters. Suffice it to say that a New Gods movie won't have any trouble finding people to pad out its cast.

They're Responsible For Mother BoxesAs is the case with most of the alien civilizations in the DC universe, the New Gods are much more technologically advanced than we mere humans, but there's one specific piece of technology that separate these characters from other worlds: Mother Boxes. Created by Himon, these portable supercomputers are so powerful that even the New Gods don't fully understand their full capabilities, and they can only be built by denizens from either New Genesis or Apokolips.

One of a Mother Box's chief abilities is creating Boom Tubes, extra-dimensional "bridges" between two points that teleport users great distances across the universe. When used, Boom Tubes emit a low hum, followed by a loud booming noise that's sometimes powerful enough to knock people off their feet, hence the name. Mother Boxes have also been used to heal users, but the thing that makes these devices most interesting is that they're sentient (they communicate through 'pings'), to the point that the New Gods from either side show them great respect.

New Genesis And Apokolips Brokered A Weird TruceNew Genesis and Apokolips are usually at war with one another, but at one point, the worlds were able to establish a temporary piece, but it came at an unusual cost. In order to ensure that the violence would stop, Highfather and Darkseid agreed to exchange their sons with one another; Highfather sent Scott Free to Darkseid, while Darkseid sent Orion to Highfather. Growing up on New Genesis, Orion was taught to control his anger, and while that wasn't easy given the time his heritage, eventually he managed to channel his rage in more useful ways. As for Scott Free, the future Mister Miracle, he was forced to fight for survival in one of Granny Goodness' Terror Orphanages, and upon reaching adulthood, he escaped Apokolips, found his way to Earth and hone his skills as an escape artist under Thaddeus Brown, the original Mister Miracle.

In the end, both Orion and Scott Free not only became two of New Genesis' greatest heroes, they've both also served as Justice Leaguers. It's also important to mention that had Scott Free not been sent to Apokolips, he wouldn't have met Big Barda, who was the strongest of Darkseid's Female Furies at the time. After falling in love with Scott, Barda joined him as a member of a resistance cell on Apokolips and eventually join him on Earth. That makes three individuals with close ties to Apokolips who managed to become forces for good. Side note: the Orion/Scott Free trade wasn't the only twisted deal Highfather and Darkseid made with each other. In the New 52 continuity, Highfather allowed Darkseid to unleash all kinds of hell on Earth 2 provided he left all the other Earths alone.

They Exist Outside Of The DC MultiverseLongtime DC readers know that this is a comic book company that loves the multiverse, i.e. alternate worlds that feature different versions of the main DC heroes and villains we know best. Sometimes the differences are small, other times they're huge, but this trope allows numerous ways to adapt characters that wouldn't be possible in just one continuity. However, in recent DC history, the New Gods are among the few exceptions to the rule, New Genesis and Apokolips are located outside of the DC multiverse.

To account for any discrepancies between how a New God is seen in one book versus another book, the Grant Morrison-penned series Multiversity revealed that manifestations/avatars of the original versions of these characters appear on the other Earths in the DC multiverse. So for instance, in the New 52 continuity, Steppenwolf was killed by Brutaal (a rogue Superman clone) in the Earth 2 series, but thanks to the way the New Gods function across the multiverse, Steppenwolf was later seen in Geoff Johns' Justice League: Darkseid War storyline alive and well. Given how often DC likes to overturn continuity elements, it's possible that this avatar explanation will be overturned at some point, but for all intents and purposes, there's one set of New Gods who are showing up in all the DC universes.

The DCEU Has Already Touched On The New GodsBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice primarily laid the groundwork for the Fourth World mythology in Batman's Knightmare. During his vision of an apocalyptic future (or should I say, an Apokoliptic future), Bruce Wayne saw a giant omega symbol burned to the ground, and if that wasn't enough of an indicator that Darkseid's forces had paid a visit to our world, the Dark Knight and his men were also attacked by Parademons. Batman v Superman's Ultimate Edition included an additional connection to the New Gods by showing Lex Luthor communicating with Steppenwolf before being apprehended by the authorities.

A year and a half later, Justice League marked Steppenwolf's official introduction to the DCEU. Having failed to conquer Earth thousands of years ago, the Apokoliptan general returned in the present day with his Parademon army to obtain the three Mother Boxes and initiate "The Unity," which would terraform Earth into a duplicate of Apokolips. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg stopped Steppenwolf from carrying out this plan, and upon feeling the villain's fear after being defeated, his Parademons attacked their former master for teleporting to another location. Justice League was also supposed to originally include a cameo from Darkseid, and with this New Gods movie in development, now the chances are stronger than ever that we'll finally see the famed villain realized in a cinematic setting. However, there are conflicting reports about whether or not New Gods will take place in the DCEU, so one should prepare for the possibility that the Ava DuVernay-helmed tale will be a standalone tale (like Todd Phillips' Joker movie) rather than exist within the same continuity established in 2013.

Everything You Need To Remember About The Toy Story Movies Before Seeing Toy Story 4

Pixars been riding the sequel train frequently over the last five years with 2016s Finding Dory, 2018s Incredibles 2 and now Toy Story 4 arriving in theaters this weekend. Its been nine years since Toy Story 3 was released, and while that movie initially looked like it intended to cap off the film series about toys who come to life when humans arent looking, Toy Story 4 is picking up where the threequel left off, and the critics are loving this latest installment.

While the Toy Story mythos is hardly as intricate as complicated as what franchises like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have built, there are still some key things one should remember from the last three Toy Story movies before seeing Toy Story 4. So lets go over those important facts now since theres only days left until the latest Pixar offering hits the silver screen.

Woody And Buzz Didnt Get Off To A Great StartWoody and Buzz Lightyear have been an iconic duo for so long, its easy to forget that these two were initially at odds with one another. Before Buzzs arrival, Woody was Andys favorite toy, but once the space ranger was given to the lad for his birthday, he took the #1 spot, which irritated Woody to no end. Frustrating the cowboy further was that unlike every other toy at the household, Buzz believed he was an actual space ranger for Star Command.

However, hardship can bring people together, and thanks to their time being held captive at Sids house, where Buzz also realized that hes a toy, Woody and Buzz eventually found common ground and worked together to escape the clutches of the sadistic adolescent. From then on, those two have been the best of friends, and with Buzz has also served as an effective second-in-command for the toy gang. Its hard to say how much screen time Woody and Buzz will have in Toy Story 4, but you can count each of them still having the others back.

Woody Made Peace With Andy Eventually Outgrowing HimWhether or not Toy Story 2 is your favorite of the series, theres no question that it was important for Woodys development. After his arm was torn and he was stolen by Al of Als Toybarn fame, Woody was briefly convinced by Stinky Pete the Prospector that it was better for a toy to be persevered rather than be played with. Had Woody stuck with that belief, he would have been shipped off to a museum in Japan.

After reuniting with his friends, Woody was convinced that he was better off being a childs plaything rather than being encased behind glass for the rest of his days, and he came back home with Jessie and Bullseye in tow. By the end of Toy Story 2, Woody informed Buzz that even though that there would come a day that Andy wouldnt play with him anymore, hed enjoy what time he had left with the boy and took comfort knowing hed still have the other toys by his side. Needless to say that plot thread factored heavily into Toy Story 3, but Toy Story 4 will not only see Woody being set aside by Bonnie, but also changing his perspective on what it truly means to be a toy.

Bo Peep Wasnt Around For Toy Story 3For the first two Toy Story movies, Bo Peep was a valued member of the toy gang, serving as Woodys love interest and offering the cowboy the occasional piece of wisdom or advice. However, other than making a silent cameo at the beginning of Toy Story 3 through home video footage, she was absent from the movie, with Woody only vaguely saying that she was among the friends theyd lost in the decade or so since Toy Story 2.

Fortunately for Bo Peep fans, shes back for Toy Story 4, and while we wont post any spoilers here for the folks who want to go in completely fresh, the movie will show how she was separated from the other toys. More importantly though is that Bo Peep is a lot more independent and adventurous since the last time we saw her. As a result of her experiences, shes developed a new philosophy on what it means to be a toy, which shell pass along to Woody when they reunite.

Andy Gave His Toys To BonnieSome may still gather action figures and other toys as collectibles when we become adults, but more frequently than not, toys are left behind when childhood is over. That was the case with Andy, who was about to head off to college at the start of Toy Story 3. It had been years since hed even looked at Woody, Buzz and everyone else, as theyd been kept in the toy box. However, they still meant a lot to him, and initially he planned to take Woody to college and keep the other toys in the attic, although a mistake on his moms behalf resulted in their crazy adventure unfolding.

By the time Toy Story 3 ended, Andy, now reunited with all his childhood toys, decided that rather than go forward with his original plan, hed go along with the suggestion on a note he believed was from his mother (it was actually from Woody) and give the toys to young Bonnie, who was at just the right age to appreciate them. Andy is now at college and taking his first steps into adulthood, and while he wont be a participant in Toy Story 4s present day narrative, we will see flashbacks of him when he was a kid.

The Toy Gang Grew A Lot BiggerFor the most part, the Toy Story movies have relied on the same core cast of characters. Toy Story 2 expanded the lineup with Mrs. Potato Head (who was mentioned at the end of the first movie), Jessie and Bullseye, and in Toy Story 3, the gang grew even bigger once Andys toys set up shop at Bonnies house. Now we can also count the likes of Dolly, Trixie, Buttercup, Mr. Pricklepants and more among this unique group.

All these toys will be back for Toy Story 4, although needless to say that many of them wont be prominent players in the story. Theyll be joined by Forky, an arts and crafts project brought to life who has taken over as being Bonnies favorite toy, and Woody will also meet Melephant Brooks, Chairol Burnett, Bitey White and Carl Reineroceros, four toys who Bonnie loved as a baby, but have since fallen out of favor. With other new characters like Duke Caboom, Ducky and Bunny, and Giggle McDimples being introduced, its possible that some of them may also join the toy gang by the time Toy Story 4 wraps up.
