How Sony's Amy Pascal Reacted When Kevin Feige Originally Pitched Marvel Borrowing Spider-Man

The Marvel Cinematic Universe was shaken to its core when Spider-Man (Tom Holland) was finally allowed to join his fellow Marvel heroes in Captain America: Civil War. Prior to that, Sony kept the character firmly gripped through The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which followed several years after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series), until Marvel eventually managed to convince Sony's Amy Pascal that it was in the best interest of the character for him to join the MCU. That said, it wasn't an easy case for Kevin Feige to make at first, as new details about the initial pitch to bring Spidey into the MCU suggest that things were pretty feisty between Feige and Pascal.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Kevin Feige met with Amy Pascal on a mission to get Peter Parker brought back into the Marvel fold. The intention here was to unravel a deal made years earlier in which Sony had acquired the Web-Head, leaving Marvel without arguably its most iconic character. When Feige presented Pascal with the possibility of handing producing duties for the next Spider-Man movie to Marvel, that's where things initially soured. In fact, as the story goes, Amy Pascal was reportedly offended enough to throw a sandwich at Feige and "half-jokingly" command that he "get the f--- out!"

In the end, however, Kevin Feige was able to convince Amy Pascal to let Marvel Studios have Spider-Man. The way Feige pulled that off was by presenting Sony with a landmark deal in which Sony would retain its ownership of the character; Marvel Studios would merely make the movies that Spider-Man would appear in and incorporate him into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now Sony gets the box office money, while Marvel Studios claims merchandise profits.

As previously mentioned, this Spider-Man deal represents a significant step towards undoing an agreement made years earlier that kept Peter Parker out of Marvel Studios' hands in Phases One and Two. When Sony initially acquired Spider-Man from Marvel, it denied the chance to buy other characters on the proposed grounds that "Nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters." As we would clearly learn over the course of the next few years, that rationale turned out to be incredibly wrong and misguided.

Although the deal did eventually go through, it has also created a somewhat muddled situation regarding which characters can show up in certain movies. Sony has let Marvel Studios use Spider-Man, but it also has its line of Spider-Man-themed films on the horizon as well, such as Venom and Silver and Black. We're still not entirely sure if Tom Holland's Spider-Man will appear in these movies, so it's a matter of waiting to see how this world keeps evolving.

Now that Spider-Man has finally been allowed to thrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's almost hard to think of a time in which he wasn't there. The character's tenure in the MCU will continue later this year when Avengers: Infinity War debuts in theaters on May 4. Before then, however, make sure to catch Black Panther when Ryan Coogler's long-awaited solo movie hits theaters this weekend on February 16.

In 2012, George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney for the bargain basement price of $4.05 billion, thus launching the Disney era of Star Wars. The new films, while hugely successful, haven't all been met with universal enthusiasm, leading to the belief that something isn't working. Whether it's the release schedule of the movies, the stories being told or the method of the telling, there's something missing. For actor Simon Pegg, that something is the influence of the creator, George Lucas, as he explained:

I must admit, watching the last Star Wars film, the overriding feeling I got when I came out was, 'I miss George Lucas.' For all the complaining that I'd done about him in the prequels, there was something amazing about his imagination. I do feel like his voice is missing from the current ones.

For Simon Pegg, the absence of George Lucas from the new Star Wars films is felt keenly. The creator's imagination and voice are not easily replaced and have proven obvious in their lacking. This has caused the actor to realize that he misses George Lucas being the shepherd of the galaxy far, far away.

This is especially honest coming from Simon Pegg, considering that the actor was in one of the new Star Wars films, playing Unkar Plutt in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is, of course, not lost on Simon Pegg how ironic missing George Lucas is, considering how famously critical he was of what George Lucas did with the prequel films.

But hindsight is 20/20 and while the Prequels showed what was wrong with George Lucas' influence, the Sequel trilogy and spinoff films have shown what Star Wars looks like without George Lucas and have also illuminated the things that George Lucas got right.

On The Adam Buxton Podcast, Simon Pegg specifically noted that he felt that he missed George Lucas while watching during the last Star Wars film, though it isn't entirely clear if he is speaking about Solo: A Star Wars Story or Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Opinions on those films and the Disney Star Wars films overall are deeply divided, but one of the criticisms of The Last Jedi is that it doesn't feel like Star Wars. Perhaps that intangible quality is what George Lucas brought and that's what's now missing.

It is kind of fascinating how even back in an era before the ubiquity of social media, George Lucas got such vocal hate for the Prequels and was blamed for ruining people's childhoods. Now, George Lucas isn't a part of things and the Sequel trilogy is just as divisive.

We've heard a lot of different things over the years about what George Lucas had in mind for Episode VII, VIII, and IX. Some of them have sounded great and like what you would expect from the story, while others have been quite weird and made some fans glad George Lucas is no longer in charge of Star Wars. It did seem though like George Lucas had an overall arc in mind,which is something Disney clearly didn't when it chose not to use his ideas.

Missing George Lucas' influence on Star Wars is likely part honest assessment and part nostalgia for the past amid disillusionment of the present. While not a great filmmaker, George Lucas' imagination did make him a great storyteller, and it's understandable to long to see him tell stories in this universe again.

Some people just have those laughs so distinct that you could point them out even in a crowded room. Mark Hamill is one such person, particularly after decades of portraying various versions of the classic Batman villain, The Joker. With a new icon waiting to be reborn in his image, Hamills recent announcement as the voice of Chucky in the Childs Play reboot is about to get his iconic vocal stamp imprinted on it as well, and judging by the result below, it sounds like the joke is on us yet again:

If youre getting a serious feeling that The Joker has somehow found himself in a brand new smart device, youre not the only one. Listening to that small clip of Childs Plays new Chucky laughing maniacally as he wishes Andy a pleasant good night has triggered some serious flashbacks to many a night in the Gotham City of Batman: The Animated Series.

Of course, it isnt all greasepaint and squirting flowers here, as the new trailers for Childs Play have shown a reinvention of the original killer doll; one that sees Chucky going digital and having the ability to hack into various devices linked to a Wi-Fi connection. So just when you thought it was safe to link your thermostat, or even your workbench, to some sort of smart apparatus, you might want to think twice once this special doll enters the equation.

There are definitely some challenges facing the new Childs Play film, especially with its place as a reboot not sanctioned by the series creator, Don Mancini. As this is a project that competes with his TV series continuation of the original continuity, theres been a bit of friction between those on that side of the fence and this new MGM/Orion reboot.

But one factor that seems to drive home the fact that, at the very least, this new Childs Play redo will be its own thing is the hiring of Mark Hamill to do the voice of Chucky. Having a talent as singular as Hamill on board differentiates the approach between the old and the new.

So rather than just try to find a Brad Dourif soundalike, this new production went and found itself an equally formidable talent that will give a new generation nightmares. And thats something we should all be grateful for.

Music has always been a key part of the Halloween franchise's place in pop culture history, with few scores being as iconic as the piano-dominant theme John Carpenter crafted for Michael Myers. That part of the legacy continues in the new 2018 sequel, with Carpenter back composing the score, but what you may not notice your first time seeing the film is that there is an special Easter egg hidden in the soundtrack. Director David Gordon Green recently revealed,

Very subtle, but in the original film there's this scene where Laurie is walking down the sidewalk, and she is singing a song to herself. Says, 'I wish I had you all alone, just the two of us.' And it was just that they couldn't afford the rights to a song. So Jamie [Lee Curtis] and John [Carpenter] kind of free-styled that song on the set, and that became that. And then I had a band write the version of the song, and then when the boy and his father are driving the truck to the bus crash, that song was playing on the radio. So those deep cuts - there's a good handful of those.

Last month I had the opportunity to partake in roundtable interviews with David Gordon Green during the Los Angeles press day for Halloween, and during the conversation I brought up the subject of Easter eggs. Having recognized a few nods to previous chapters of the series while watching the movie, I asked if he had any favorite detail-driven homages in the film. And while he also mentioned a bit that can't be revealed until after the movie is released, he also revealed the spoiler-free bit above.

The song in the original Halloween that David Gordon Green is referencing can be found at the very start of the film shortly after Laurie Strode is first introduced to audiences. As she is walking to school, she is asked by her father to drop a key off at the Myers' place -- and it's here that Michael Myers first sets eyes on her. After she leaves the key and continues on her way, Michael continues to watch her, and listens as she sings a song to herself.

Halloween was famously an extremely low-budgeted production, but that's historically been a part of its charm. It's an extremely straight-forward, no frills slasher film, and its simplicity makes it all the more terrifying. The production had more important things to spend money on than potentially expensive song rights, and so they came up with something of their own -- and now that same track exists as something special in the 2018 sequel.

This is a great little Easter egg, but, as mentioned, it's one of many scattered throughout the new Halloween. And while not all of them can be revealed right now, be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend in the coming days for more of our coverage and discussion.
