Sigourney Weaver Says The Avatar 2 And 3 Sets Don't Have Enough Women

Hollywood has come a long way when it comes to including women on the set, but Sigourney Weaver says the industry still has a long way to go. The actress, who is currently in the middle of making several Avatar movies with James Cameron, says that there simply aren't enough women or minorities on the set, mostly because for that to happen the industry needs to attract new talent, not simply bring back the same old people. According to Weaver...

I've been working on Avatar 2 and 3 with James Cameron, and the base of his crew was so many guys he's worked with over many years. And there are a lot of young people involved. I think one of the frustrations is that there haven't been enough training programs to diversify the crew community, the cast community, but primarily there has to be a much bigger emphasis in the industry in bringing new people into the business. Even if all the crews wanted to bring in a more diverse crew, more women, minorities, that hasn't been prioritized.

Many women have spoken out in recent months regarding the state of Hollywood for women both in front of and behind the camera. There has been a clear call for more diversity among movie casts and crews but it seems that on the set of the first two Avatar sequels, Sigourney Weaver isn't really seeing it happen.

For what it's worth, it seems the reason for this isn't so much based in any sort of intentional avoidance today as it is a relic of an earlier era. James Cameron, like many filmmakers, has found various crewmembers, especially at the higher levels, that he prefers to work with, and as such, when he went to work on his newest project, he called them in., The thing is, these people are likely to have been working in Hollywood for decades, just like Cameron himself, and so they are more likely to be men because that was the status quo when Cameron began making a name for himself.

As Sigourney Weaver tells THR, for this to change, there needs to be an emphasis placed on bringing in new people and making sure those new people come from more diverse backgrounds. Then, 20 years from now, when a director brings in those key crew members he always works with, there's a better chance it will be a more diverse group.

Sigourney Weaver certainly isn't being super critical of Jamer Cameron. The pair have worked together before and clearly enjoy collaborating, but it shows how important the actress thinks the issue is that she's willing to speak out about it while in the middle of working on the set in question.

The first of the long-awaited Avatar sequels is currently set to arrive in December of 2020.

Zachary Levi was perfect casting to play the child in a man's body that is the superhero Shazam. However, Levi didn't necessarily have the body of a superhero when he was cast in the role. The actor has spoken a lot about what he had to go through to be believable as a superhero. It required a lot of work on his part, but a large amount of that work was actually eating.

While Zachary Levi spent a lot of time at the gym, as you would expect, that gym work was designed to convert calories into muscle, and so he had to consume a massive amount of calories in addition to his workouts. According to Levi...

I got the job and I was in the gym 5-6 days a week. When I was trying to build mass, youve got to eat a lot of calories, 3,500-3,700 calories a day. And they have to be really clean calories, they cant just be Hagen-Dazs!

A fairly standard adult diet would be something around 2,000 calories a day, which means that Zachary Levi was eating nearly double that along with working out nearly every day of the week. On the one hand, working out that much is going to require a pretty impressive calorie intake to keep you from feeling perpetually starved, but that's still a crazy amount of food.

If you could eat anything you wanted then eating that much might not be all that bad, but as Zachary Levi tells People, it's not like he just sat around and ate ice cream. I mean, it's dairy so there's some protein in ice cream, but there was probably a lot more meat and other more serious protein sources included. Levi has said his diet was basically meat and vegetables five times a day, and considering the calorie count, these were probably pretty close to full meals five times a day. Even with the hunger that you get from working out, I can imagine around meal number five eating more food is not what you'd want to spend your time doing, but it's just as necessary as the exercise.

Being a movie star may be largely as glamorous as it appears to be, but sometimes there is some pretty serious work to be done. Levi says it was a dream come true to play the lead in a superhero movie but the guy had to work to make that dream a reality. While looking like a superhero can be done with padded suits and CGI, to feel like a superhero, you've got to still do a lot of the real work.

On the plus side, if you do throw in some ice cream, you probably burn it off pretty quickly based on how much you're working out.

Based on Shazam!'s opening weekend success, it looks like all the hard work was worth it. The film grossed over $50 million in North America and broke the $100 million mark in total overseas business. It's another big hit for DC following Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne was an important player in the first Ant-Man movie, but unlike Paul Rudd's Scott Lang, she didn't get to suit up. Having lost his wife Janet, the first Wasp, in the line of duty, Hank Pym was worried about losing his daughter too, but in the Ant-Man mid-credits scene, he decided to give Hope the prototype Wasp suit he'd been keeping in storage. Hope is finally debuting as Wasp next week in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but the original plan was for Hope to make her first superhero appearance in Captain America: Civil War. As for why this didn't end up happening, Lilly explained:

Then they said what I thought they were going to say, which is, 'We really want to dedicate a film to introducing this female superhero, and we don't want her just to be a side note in this larger story.' That was so exciting for me.

Captain America: Civil War had a lot of superhero participants, and having already been introduced to audiences the year prior, Ant-Man was brought in as a member of Captain America's team. However, rather than have Hope accompany Scott as The Wasp for the conflict over the Sokovia Accords, as Evangeline Lilly said at a recent press conference for Ant-Man and the Wasp, the Marvel Cinematic Universe bigwigs decided it would be better to hold her Wasp introduction for a later date so that she could properly shine. Given that Civil War also introduced Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther and Tom Holland's Spider-Man, having Hope pop in for her first Wasp appearance definitely would have felt like overkill. Still, I'd be interested to learn what a Civil War with Wasp involved would have looked like.

Even though Hope didn't get to participate in Captain America: Civil War, the aftermath of that movie will play into the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp. Although Scott and his fellow allies were broken out of The Raft by Steve Rogers at the end of Civil War, Scott decided to take a deal with the U.S. government to be placed under house arrest. At the start of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott and Hope have been estranged, and it's entirely possible that Scott's involvement in Civil War might be the reason that their relationship ended. Regardless, Scott and Hope will need to put aside their differences and team up as Ant-Man and Wasp for a new mission, which will see them fighting Ghost. More importantly, this will be our first chance to see how skilled Hope is harnessing Pym particles and beating up bad guys out in the field.
