The Bizarre Way Truth Or Dares Director Pitched The Movie

Pitching a movie is an incredibly complicated process. Usually it involves coming to the table with a fully-formed idea and a detailed plan showing how to bring that idea to life. However, that wasn't the case for Blumhouse's Truth or Dare. In fact, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Truth or Dare director Jeff Wadlow explained that he got the job for the film by spitballing an opening scene after learning the title of the movie in his initial meetings with Blumhouse. During the interview, Wadlow told us:

Truth or Dare came about because I had a meeting with Jason Blum and we hit it off. He said, 'I want to make a movie with you,' and I said 'Okay!' He said, 'Would you be interested in making a movie called Truth or Dare?' and I said 'Yeah that could be interesting. Do you have a script?' He said 'Nope.' I was like 'Do you have a book? Anything?' Nope. Just the title. I sort of thought about it for a moment, and I said 'Well what if it opened this way, and I pitched him the opening scene in the gas station. He was like 'Well what happens next?' And I said 'I don't know! I am making this up!'

Talk about improvisational skill. Jeff Wadlow did not have a full idea for what Truth or Dare would eventually become when he walked in for his meeting with Jeff Blum because there wasn't an idea at all. Blumhouse simply pitched him the title, and then the Kick-Ass 2 director came up with a sequence that would eventually go on to become the film's horrifying opening scene. Once that idea was locked into place, Wadlow got the job and crafted a narrative that could build off of the seeds planted in that original meeting.

Of course, a story did eventually come together. Once he obtained the job, Jeff Wadlow sat down with several other writers (in a manner more akin to TV writing than feature film writing), and they all collaborated on a core story that could build off of the idea established in that initial pitch. From there, Truth or Dare finally evolved into the film that will hit theaters this weekend.

Despite the overall simplicity of the premise, we should note that Truth or Dare arguably feels reasonably indicative of the style of horror filmmaking that has worked for Blumhouse in recent years. With movies like Happy Death Day and Unfriended (to name just a couple), the horror studio has seen great success by pitching low-cost, high-concept thrillers that maximize easy-to-understand ideas into full-blown feature films with three-act structures. Truth or Dare is the latest movie to take that idea and run with it, so we will have to wait and see how audiences respond to it.

This weekend, moviegoers will have the opportunity to see John Boyega co-pilot a giant robot and fight equally large monsters as Jake Pentecost in Pacific Rim Uprising, but it was only a couple months ago that we saw the actor reprising Finn for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Just like how we had to wait two years between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, it won't be until the final month of 2019 that we see Boyega and his Star Wars costars return for Episode 9, but Boyega is already planning his work-out regiment, as he thinks the tale will packed with even more conflict than the previous installments he's been in. Boyega explained:

Next for me, filming wise, is Star Wars: Episode IX in July. They've officially given us a note to start training soon. I'm going to take a holiday before that. I think that, regardless of where the story goes -- and I haven't read it, by the way -- I think it's going to be all out war. So I know that I'm going to have to work out and strengthen for that part.

Even with Pacific Rim Uprising finally arriving in theaters, John Boyega is keeping busy. As he recently told CinemaBlend ahead of his upcoming appearance at Awesome Con in Washington D.C., while he will be taking a vacation soon to recharge the ol' batteries, he'll still need to begin bulking up soon for Star Wars: Episode IX. With Episode 9 being moved from May of 2019 to December of the same year, principal photography is scheduled to begin this summer, but for Boyega (and no doubt many of the other actors), he'll need to ensure he's in proper shape before the cameras start rolling. We're a long ways off from learning any Episode 9 plot details, but given how The Last Jedi ended, I can't say I'm shocked by Boyega saying that the final entry of this Star Wars trilogy will be "all out war."

When we left off with Finn and his allies at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, nearly all of The Resistance had been wiped out by The First Order, and the handful of survivors managed to escape from Crait on the Millennium Falcon thanks to Luke Skywalker distracting Kylo Ren with his Force projection. Even with their pitiful numbers, General Leia Organa predicted that because of Luke's sacrifice, The Resistance will rise again. It remains to be seen how much time will have passed when Episode 9 begins, but since the movie will presumably mark the end of the conflict between The Resistance and The First Order, it's a good bet that this war will go out with an especially big bang, and Finn will need to be in great shape for those final fights.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released in theaters on December 20, 2019, but if you're interested in watching John Boyega's most recent work, you can either head to the theater this weekend to see Pacific Rim Uprising, or you can watch The Last Jedi, which is now available on Digital HD and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD next Tuesday, March 27.

Full Mortal Engines Trailer Finally Explains The Plot

Big things are on the horizon for later this year. Monumental things. City-sized things. That's where Mortal Engines factors into the equation. The adaptation of Philip Reeve's book series has just released a new trailer, and the preview offers a far better explanation of the apocalyptic landscape occupied by moving cities, as well as the political intrigue that will drive the plot forward. Check out the full trailer, below, to finally get a better idea of what this movie will be about.

That trailer lays out the plot of Mortal Engines in far greater detail compared to previous teases. The film centers on a steampunk dystopian future in which humanity has adopted moving cities as means of travel in the wake of a devastating war. In a roving version of London, we find Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), a deadly and scarred fugitive on a mission to assassinate Thaddeus Valentine (The Matrix's Hugo Weaving) for the murder of her mother years earlier. Along the way, she runs into Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) and the two form a tenuous partnership to go after Valentine and change humanity's apocalyptic course.

In addition to the massive action, there's also a notable emphasis on interpersonal drama in this trailer. The beginning of the preview emphasizes that Hester harbors deep resentments towards Valentine for the murder of her mother, but it looks like the film will send her on a mission to reveal a conspiracy initially uncovered by her mother years earlier.

One of the most exciting elements teased by this trailer is the sheer size and scope of the world created by director Christian Rivers. There's a clear emphasis placed on the magnitude of the fallout of the "Sixty Minute War" that destroyed much of the planet, and the difference in size between the "Predator Cities" and the smaller municipalities is breathtaking in some of the sequences shown in this trailer. Though producer Peter Jackson isn't directing this particular adventure story, the influence of his knack for scale on projects like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is particularly apparent to see for fans of his work. With action, intrigued, and a pre-existing IP backing this project, there's reason to believe that Mortal Engines could make a serious impression on audiences later this year when it finally debuts.
