Jason David Frank Reacts To Vin Diesel's Casting As Bloodshot

Superhero movies and comic book adaptations have quickly become the most popular genre in filmmaking. Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Extended Universe, and X-Men franchise, there are new superhero blockbusters being released every few months. Aside from the behemoth franchises, there are also smaller passion projects coming from lesser known comic book characters. One of these is the upcoming Bloodshot movie, based off the Valiant Comics character of the same name. OG Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank had been vying for the role for years, playing Bloodshoot on Valiant's recent web series Ninjak vs. the Valiant Universe. When stopping by CinemaBlend's shooting suite at San Diego Comic-Con, Frank told me how he felt about Diesel getting the role, saying:

I was a little sad that Vin Diesel is doing it. But he's Vin Diesel. He's filming the movie now in Africa. A huge, multi-million dollar movie.

Well, that's a serious bummer. After playing Bloodshoot and being the character's biggest cheerleader for mainstream success in the past few years, Valiant Comics ultimately ended up picking a bigger name to carry the Bloodshot movie. Vin Diesel is a great choice all things considered, with a massive action-heavy audience at his disposal thanks to The Fast and the Furious franchise and voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Jason David Frank may forever be Power Rangers' biggest icon Tommy Oliver, the actor/martial artist does want to play different characters. Given his athletic ability and experience playing Bloodshoot in the Valiant webseries, he seems like the perfect person to play Raymond Garrison on the silver screen. But studios like to cast names, and Vin Diesel's no doubt carries a bit more weight, despite JDF's ability to trigger nostalgic feelings with 90s kids everywhere.

In our same conversation, Jason David Frank mentioned how Vin Diesel's upcoming role might actually help the Power Rangers alum. Because if the movie is big, fans will no doubt want more of the white skinned badass, therefore hopefully inspiring them to check out Ninjak vs. the Valiant Universe. Plus he wants a cameo. As Frank told me,

It's still good for me, though. Because here you have Vin Diesel, and I was the original Bloodshot. It's good. I'm hoping to do something small in that movie. I hope it all works out the way it was supposed to.

That's certainly a good way to look at it. Because Jason David Frank will always be royalty for the comic-con crowd, Vin Diesel's movie still has the potential to reintroduce him to mainstream audiences. Or it will be a flop, and then Tommy Oliver will be able to wash his hands clean of the project.

Although you can sense Jason David Frank's disappointment in that video, he seems to have a good attitude about the Bloodshot situation. He's been in show business for years now, so the former Power Ranger understands how the cookie crumbles. Even if he's not happy about it.

Could The Disney Princesses Carry Their Own Film Together? Ralph Breaks The Internets Directors Weigh In

There are many things to look forward to in Walt Disney Animation Studio's Ralph Breaks The Internet, but a big part of the hype surrounding the film has been the inclusion of the Disney Princesses. The movie will be the first to feature all of the classic characters together, and since that fact was revealed last year there has been conversation about their potential future. Could the ensemble regroup to carry their own feature? Directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston believe that it's a concept that's definitely on the table:

Phil Johnston: Someone could do it, yeah.Rich Moore: Definitely. It's, again, it depends on how the audience reacts to it...Phil Johnston: And what's the story? It's always that for me. If there's a good story to be told...

With Ralph Breaks The Internet set to arrive in theaters in just a few weeks, Disney held their domestic press day in Los Angeles this weekend, and I had the pleasure of sitting down with the new movie's directors. It was at the end of our on-camera interview that I asked for their thoughts about a Disney Princesses movie, and while they had a few caveats -- including the audience reaction to the portrayals and a good narrative foundation -- they totally backed the idea.

We meet the Disney Princesses together in Wreck-It Ralph during a sequence in which fellow princess Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) is visiting OhMyDisney.com. The diminutive, spunky racer sneaks into the dressing room of their stage show, and while security is on high at first, ultimately their shared experiences create an amazing bond. Before long they are all hanging out in pajamas, and the princesses are helping Vanellope with an existential crisis.

The sequence allows for a lot of wonderful meta jokes that add a lovable self-awareness to characters who previously didn't have that benefit. The portrayals add new dimensions, while also doing an interesting job of changing how we look at some long-established pop-culture icons. This was something that Rich Moore pointed out as he continued his argument in defense of the idea:

They're fun characters, and it seems like the scene in the movie instantly makes them more contemporary and human. It's good to kind of see their foibles and flaws, and immediately just makes them much richer characters.

Of course, a lot of what's great about the Ralph Breaks The Internet is how we get the opportunity to see how the Disney Princesses interact together -- and Rich Moore noted that you can quickly see some interesting dynamics and relationships established. Said the co-director,

You can see where in their friendships, where there could be good electricity between a bunch of characters. So never say never, man!

Right now the future for a Disney Princesses movie is unclear, but the hype should just get you all the more excited for Ralph Breaks The Internet -- starring John C. Reilly, Taraji P. Henson, Gal Gadot, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch. The Rock Drops First Look At Vanessa Kirbys Hobbs And Shaw Character

The Rock's Fast and Furious spinoff is currently filming, and the man has brought us our first look at another new character. Previously we got a look at how Idris Elba will look when he takes the screen as the villain of Hobbs and Shaw, but now we have a look at somebody else a little more "in the family." Vanessa Kirby will be playing the sister of Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. Meet Hattie.

It seems that if you're a member of the Shaw family, you're destined to be involved in the law, either enforcing it or breaking it. While Deckard Shaw and his brother Owen entered the world of the Fast and Furious series as criminals, Hattie Shaw is actually an MI6 agent. Based on the fact that the Shaw matriarch, as played by Helen Mirren in The Fate of the Furious also has a tenuous relationship with honesty, it makes it seem like Hattie Shaw may be the black sheep of the family, potentially making her the most interesting member of the Shaw clan.

It seems that while Hattie Shaw may be related to Deckard, she'll have a closer relationship with Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs, something that won't sit well with Deckard. Clearly, this is where some of the film's more humorous elements will come in. While Hobbs and Shaw will be working together in the new movie that is named for them, it seems clear that, like in The Fate of the Furious, this will be a relationship of convenience, not something either party is all that thrilled about.

Hobbs and Shaw's chemistry in the previous film came from the way the two were so entertaining in the way they hated each other. The two might respect each other, but that doesn't mean Deckard will enjoy the fact that his sister is hanging out with Hobbs.

Vanessa Kirby is looking great in Dwayne Johnson's Instagram picture. She stole her portion of the show earlier this year in Mission: Impossible - Fallout as a woman on the other side of the law, so seeing her playing one of the good guys in a similarly action-heavy franchise should be just as much fun.

Of course, the tables may be turned in the movie as well, as we've heard that Hattie Shaw won't be the only sibling that we'll meet in the new film. The word is Hobbs' mother and brothers will also play into the story in some way. Maybe Shaw will end up paling around with them as a way to drive his partner equally nuts.

Hobbs and Shaw will hit theaters next year as a sort of stopgap for the Fast and Furious franchise, as the already planned ninth entry in the series was originally set to be released in 2019, but has been delayed.
